Did You Know?

  • Every $1 spent on seed and soil can save $2.50 in food purchases, according to the Free Range Network’s “own grown economics.”
  • A 10’x10’ plot can provide a family with 322 pounds of food, based on the Ecology Action group’s “biointensive agriculture” program.
  • Adults with a household member in a community garden were found three times more likely to eat fruits and vegetables at least five times a day in a study of 766 Michigan adults reported by the Society for Nutrition Education.
  • The two biggest barriers to growing in Vancouver were lack of land (15% of respondents) and lack of knowledge (12%), according to a VCAN survey of 120 adults interested in community gardening.
